Polyneuropathy: Damage to the Peripheral Nerves
Article by the Keto doctors Dr. Brigitte Karner and Dr. Wolfgang Karner
Just as our brain function can be impaired, our peripheral nerves can also suffer damage. Nerve cells are extremely sensitive and particularly vulnerable to various influences. The most common causes of polyneuropathy include alcohol abuse, environmental toxins, vitamin deficiencies, as well as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Typical symptoms include tingling in the feet, muscle and coordination problems, and nighttime numbness. Unfortunately, there is currently no specific therapy except eliminating known causes. For this reason, only certain forms are curable, while others take a chronic course.
Nutrition as a Key to Treatment
Nutrition plays a crucial role in polyneuropathy as well. Studies have shown that insulin resistance is a significant factor that damages nerve cells. A high-carbohydrate diet often leads to insulin resistance, which impairs the supply of sensitive nerve cells. As a result, the nerves are no longer adequately nourished, leading to irritation symptoms. This explains the tingling, the unpleasant sensation of “restless legs,” and numbness. Nerves that are resistant to insulin require ketones as an alternative energy source.
Therapeutic Approaches: Ketogenic Nutrition and Nutrient Support
When treating polyneuropathy, we combine the ketogenic diet with anti-inflammatory strategies, such as the use of secondary plant compounds and a high intake of micronutrients like vitamin D, B vitamins, and antioxidants.
The goal of therapy is to optimally supply the sensitive nerve cells with the nutrients they need. Ketones play a central role in this, as they can quickly overcome insulin resistance and ensure sufficient nutrient supply for the nerve cells. This helps improve nerve irritation and reduce symptoms.
Our polyneuropathy patients have achieved impressive results with a ketogenic diet.
